The Great Paradox: Why many SEO firms think they must cold call customers

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a customer say: “Over the last year, we have been called by several SEO and/or Social Media firms claiming to specialize in my industry…but you are different

… you never called us and you are talking about things they weren’t… and we like what you are saying much better…” Thanks for the compliment(s) and now I would like explain why this always happens.

As opposed to traditional “push marketing” techniques such as television, radio, newspaper, etc…, SEO is considered “pull marketing.” And, as you can imagine, pull marketing is much more effective ROI (return on investment) than it’s dinosaur brethren. Think about spending all of your marketing efforts and budget towards the exact moment in time where someone goes to the search engine, submits a query, and then pulls your company from the search results. It’s highly effective and you don’t waste resources on low ROI marketing activities.

When a sales rep cold calls a business claiming to be an industry expert, it basically turns the fundamental principles of SEO upside down on it’s head. The paradox is found here: Even though SEO offers a higher ROI than traditional techniques, many SEO firms think it’s necessary to invest in sales personnel (and associated overhead) to grow their business.  So why invest in archaic techniques? The answer is simple: They don’t truly know the most effective ways to grow a business. Lets get straight to the point:  If you are selling a pricy service, would you cold call an office manager– or position yourself in Google? Most intelligent people will choose the latter.

At this point, you may be thinking: “Good points… but what is the psychological motivation for why they are doing this?” I think it’s because they don’t trust the effectiveness of what they are selling. Snake oil never cured or helped anybody, and if I was selling it, I darn sure wouldn’t use it personally in an effort to somehow better my life situation.

Search engine optimization is not a commodity. It’s a science that involves, but is not limited to the following skill sets:  Marketing, copy writing, usability, design, programming, management and reporting.
